U.S. Elections Become Largest Non-Sporting Betting Event In UK History
The 2016 U.S. elections will go down in history as one of the most colorful and riveting of all time. Hollywood itself could not have written an odder script as global interest in the elections remains at an all-time high.
A case in point is the UK gambling industry who according to CNN Money are expected to handle over £150 million on the outcome of the 2016 presidential election. This will make it the largest non-sporting betting event in British history including the Brexit referendum, royal baby and previous elections.
According to Ladbrokes they anticipate 35 bets per minute as punters await the final results throughout the night. William Hill have taken a bet from a woman who staked €550,000 on Hilary Clinton becoming president. Rival bookie Paddy Power confirmed that they have had over 12 gamblers placing five figure bets.
Ladbrokes have taken two bets on Donald Trump winning the election from punters who placed £200 when the odds were stacked against him. If Trump wins they could win £30,000. At the time of this article being published most gambling companies are giving Hillary somewhere in the 80% range of winning and with Trump only around 20%.
The shock result of Brexit is still fresh in the memory with bookmakers and there is still the possibility of a major upset. No doubt that the Hollywood like campaign filled with scandal after scandal on both sides has meant many punters are keen to try participate in the election fever.
