Unibet Applies For Romanian Licence
European sports operator Unibet have confirmed they are in the process of re-applying for an online gambling license in Romania. This follows the exit of William Hill and Ladbrokes in June due to new regulations put in place.
In a statement released Unibet said,” While Unibet is still analyzing the license requirements/conditions, we would like to let you know that Unibet is in the process of going ahead with its application for a Romanian licence. We will contact those partners currently referring Romanian customers in a separate communication in the coming days with more information on this matter.”
President Klaus Iohannis introduced anew online gambling framework in May which would allow international operators to enter the Romanian market. In terms of the proposed regulations , there will be a 20% tax charge on all online gambling revenues generated by national consumers. The sticky point is that there is a tax-back amendment for operators on prior revenues if they want to re-enter the market.
