PokerStars Granted One Year Danish Sports Betting Licence
PokerStars are continuing to expand and diversify their offering from just online poker. Their latest move to achieve this is their new one-year license agreement they have received from the Danish online gambling regulator Spillmynddigheden. PokerStars will be allowed to offer their Danish players the option of sports betting from their existing accounts. The new “prove yourself” license will mean that PokerStars will be allowed to commence operation in the New Year with the hope of gaining a five year license.
Back in August PokerStars announced their intention to offer their sports betting product in Ireland. This latest move into the Danish Market shows again their determination to penetrate new markets. PokerStars move into sports betting is not surprising as they have also entered the lucrative daily fantasy sports market with their StarsDraft offering. The current woes for the DFS sector in the US could well mean that PokerStars actively seek new markets that are not battling legal problems.
VP of communications for Maya Eric Hollresier said,” Online betting is an exciting pastime for sports fans and provides a way for them to put their passion and knowledge to the test in competition with friends and other fans. We’re pleased to offer sports betting under a licence that ensures local oversight of the industry and allows PokerStars to bring its gaming expertise and high standards of integrity, compliance and security to Danish bettors. This furthers Amaya’s commitment to the responsible growth of online gaming by supporting local regulation that protects players, creates a viable, competitive marketplace and provides revenue for local governments.”
