NBA Drops Opposition To Canadian Sports Betting Bill
The “sudden” turnaround by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver on the issue of legalizing sports betting has been covered by our team over the last few months. Whether his change of heart was due to a reality check or a real change of heart remains to be seen. Until recently all the major sporting bodies were officially against legalizing sports betting as they believed it would affect the integrity of the game.
Needless to say this to an outsider is absurd as the like of DraftKings and FanDuel have their fingers in just about every major sporting franchise in the U.S. Anyone claiming that daily fantasy sports is anything but gambling is at best showing their ignorance or simply out of touch with the facts on the ground.
In another sign of the NBA keeping up with the times, they have become the first US pro league to voice their public support for the Canadian single sport betting bill C290. This bill aims to amend the Criminal Code with regard to Canadian sports betting. It will permit single-game wagers in licensed gambling. The Canadian Gaming Association (CGA) released a statement in which they noted the support of the NBA for sports betting in Canada “as long as there is an appropriate legislative framework that protects the integrity of the game.” The C290 Bill is still stalled at the Ottawa Senate and is unlikely to be reviewed before the October General Election in Canada.
