Dutch Online Gambling Market Could Be Worth €1 Billion Annually
We reported recently on the Dutch parliament moving towards passing an online bill that would offer regulated online sports betting. As it stands online gambling is illegal in the Netherlands but many offshore operators continue to offer their services. With the expected online gambling regime set to come into play sometime in 2017, the proponents for online gambling are looking to size up the Dutch Market.
A survey conducted by Motivaction on behalf of land based operator Holland Casino gives some interesting insights into this market. One of course has to take the data released with a skeptical eye but nonetheless it does make for interesting reading. According to the survey up to 1.5 million Dutch people gamble online while spending an average of €26 per month. This over a year works out to be around €500m which is considerably more than some thought.
About 700k Dutch gamblers play games that include bingo, roulette, blackjack and sports betting online three times a year and around 800k play these games four times or more. Motivaction points out an interesting figure in neighboring Denmark whose population is around a third of the Netherlands. In the first nine months of 2015 Danish online gambling revenues was around €338m. Given the size of the Netherlands there is a case to be made that the Dutch online market could be worth in the region of €1 billion.
