DraftKings Expands Into Austria and Ireland
DFS operator DraftKings has expanded their offering into Austria and Ireland. All of the 10 sports available to players in the US will now be available to players in Austria and Ireland including the NFL, NBA and MBL.
Unlike rivals FanDuel who pulled out of the UK recently, DraftKings is looking to expand beyond the US, DraftKings CEO Jason Robbins said,” Sports fans in Europe are embracing the game inside the game through DraftKings’ contests and content. As we looked to expand our European footprint, it was an easy choice to launch in Ireland and Austria, given their renowned passion for sports.”
Both countries combined have a population of 13 million and DFS is not too popular there. Currently DraftKings operates in the US, Canada, Germany, UK and Malta. The numbers in the UK are not exactly clear but DraftKings said that in the UK, September 2017 saw a 51% year-on-year growth in entry fees and 321% year-over-year growth in new customers. In Germany, September saw 46% growth in registered customers, the largest monthly growth to-date.
Chief International Officer of DraftKings, Jeffery Haas went on to explain why Irish fans would embrace DFS. He said,” Ireland’s sports culture runs deep, with hundreds of thousands of passionate fans following both ‘proper football’ and ‘gridiron football’ across European and American sports leagues. Irish football fans will find many opportunities to test their wits on DraftKings while enjoying a new way to sweat the action during fixtures. We enhance that connection with our exciting contests, innovative content and real-time sports analysis and data. DraftKings is essentially the second screen for sports fans watching a match at the pub, at home or on the go.”
