DraftKings and FanDuel Team Up In Maryland
Anyone following daily fantasy sports would k ow that one of the fiercest rivalry in the gaming/gambling industry is between that of DraftKings and FanDuel who until six months ago were the undisputed powerhouses of this explosive market.
The last few months have been challenging to say the least for both DraftKings and FanDuel as they face legal challenges from many states who have woken up after years of them operating to realize that there is not much difference between DFS and real money gambling. Of course pundits of DFS are adamant that skill is an important element of winning and it is not to be compared to pulling a lever on a slots machine.
Due to the fact that the DFS industry is facing a real challenge to its very existence, DraftKings and FanDuel have in the last few months joined forces to fight a common cause. Their latest co-operation comes in the state of Maryland as the Maryland Federal Assembly opens it’s session on Jan. 13 to decide if fantasy sports is considered illegal in the state of Maryland.
Over 100,000 Maryland residents were sent emails urging them to email Comptroller Peter Franchot and convince him of how important fantasy sports really is.
The email states,” Your ability to continue playing fantasy sports in Maryland is at risk but it’s not too late. Let state Comptroller Peter Franchot know that Maryland residents want to continue playing fantasy sports. We support regulations that reasonably and fairly protect your right to continue enjoying the games you love. But some states have banned fantasy sports, and we are concerned that Maryland may be heading in that direction.”
It remains to be seen if Maryland will become another state to follow the likes of Nevada who have banned fantasy sports sites DraftKings and FanDuel from operating there.
