Deutsche Telekom Applies For Sports Betting Licence
The German gambling laws are problematic and have resulted in British-based gambling companies like William Hill and Betfair scaling back their operations. Today the telecommunications giant Deutsche Telekom has told Reuters that they have applied for a sports betting license which is being reviewed by the Ministry of Interior of the German state of Hesse. The spokesman for the ministry remind quiet on the issue and refused to comment while a spokesperson for Deutsche Telekom remained cautious.
As we mentioned gambling in Germany is regulated in most parts except for the Northern state of Schleswig which has adopted a more liberal approach to online gambling. Currently there Germany’s states have agreed to offer 20 concessions to companies for nationwide sports betting. This is significant as most online gambling is tightly regulated due to concerns of creating a gambling problem. It remains to be seen if Deutsche Telekom receives the license that would see it competing with other online gambling companies.
