Aussies Maintain Reputation As World’s Biggest Gamblers
The fact that Australians are the biggest gamblers on the planet is nothing new as we reported last year. However the rate at which they are growing in per capita spending is surprising even the industry experts. According to studies Australians have spent more on gambling this year with around $17.5b spent on all forms of gambling until September 30 this year. This is a 6.1% increase from the same period last year.
This averages out to a staggering average of A$1000 per resident according to Australia Bureau of Statistics. In fact the rate of spending in gambling is more than double the country’s overall rate of growth.
Needless to say these latest figures have got anti-gambling groups raising serious concerns. What’s interesting is that the figures are up but the overall participation of Australians in gambling is down from the 80% mark in 2000 to around 64% in 2014.
The main spending comes from video poker machines or pokies as they are better known as down under. Australia is the second highest country after Italy when it comes to electronic gaming machines per person with over 200k of these money eating devices. Online sports betting is the growing star but online betting is still much of a niche overall.
