CrownBet And Fox Sports In Talks On Joint DFS Venture

Despite the woes of the daily fantasy sports market in the US, the revenues generated in entry fees increased from $214 million in 2013 to $3 billion in 2015. This sector of gaming or gambling depending on which side of the fence you sit has got the attention of global media groups outside of the US. Australia is known as the nation who gamble the most and sports betting down under is a large part of that. It has been confirmed now that News Corp Australia’s Fox Sports and CrownBet are in advanced talks to create a daily fantasy sports joint venture. Reports in the Australian state that the joint DFS venture is planned to be unveiled ahead of the March 24 Kickoff of the AFL season. In terms of the deal CrownBet would take care of the gambling license and technology and Fox Sports would handle the media marketing and promotion via their AFL coverage. The fact that a media company like Fox Sports is getting involved in DFS is not surprising and follows other major global media companies that are looking to diversify their portfolio into markets that are proven cash cows. Two of the major player in the DFS industry DraftKings and FanDuel have companies like NBC, ComCast, Major League Baseball and others who are invested. CrownBet’s involvement would not affect News Corp’s partnerships with gambling powerhouse Tabcorp as DFS is an entirely different market. The success of this venture in Australia will be an interesting test case for the popularity of DFS outside the US. As of now both DraftKings and FanDuel have started to operate in markets like the UK and intend expanding to other...
