Mt. Gox Bitcoin Exchange Seems To Have Disappeared In Cyberspace Black Hole

The woes of Bitcoin seem to be never ending. There is rumor and speculation that one of the biggest Bitcoin exchanges is could be out of business for good. Mt. Gox has been in the headlines for the wrong reasons of late and the latest news could be the last nail in the coffin. As we post this article Mt. Gox seems to have disappeared into a black hole in cyberspace. Anyone attempting to access the site gets a blank page without an error message. As of now the founder of Mt. Gox is not available for comment and their Tokyo offices are empty. Besides the panic amongst investors in Mt. Gox the more serious question is if the problem is a local one related to mismanagement at Mt. Gox or a more general problem with Bitcoin? As reported earlier this month, Mt. Gox suspended withdrawals after some “unusual activity”. There are wild rumors of a report circulation on the internet which claims that due to security problems over 744.000 Bitcoins were ”missing due to malleability-related theft.” The solvency of the company is been questioned as currently Mt.Gox has only $37.75m in assets and over $174m in liabilities. Whether this document is genuine or not, the site been down and business offices empty are not a good sign. Attempts to reach Mt. Gox via telephone or email were unsuccessful. Angry virtual currency traders hare protesting outside Mt. Gox’s offices with one trader been quoted as saying,” It looks like that’s disappeared.” As a result of this Mt. Gox’s “Houdini” disappearance act the virtual currency is down more than 22% as we post this article. We will continue to update this story as it...

Online Betting Upgrade Expected To Hamper Ladbrokes First Half Earnings

The second biggest British bookmaker Ladbrokes is preparing shareholders for the expected disappointing first half operating profits in 2014. With over 2,300 retail shops, Ladbrokes are still playing catch up with the largest bookmaker in Britain, William Hill. As we reported last year the mobile sector and online sports betting is where Ladbrokes are falling short of their competitors and as a result have invested heavily on changing their platform. Ladbrokes had a difficult 2013 as their partnership with Playtech is taking longer than expected to implement. Playtech are a leading software developer and specialize in  mobile gaming which is vital for Ladbrokes’ future growth. Chief Executive Richard Glynn is under increasing pressure and the figures for operating profit in 2013 will make things worse. According to Ladbrokes annual operating profit fell a whopping 33% to £138.3m in 2013. The market which took the biggest hit was its UK retail business that was down 26%. Profits in their digital division were also down 74%. Timing is critical for Ladbrokes as the World Cup in Brazil is around the corner. Although the figures are bad, they are in line with market forecasts due to the change in systems. The Playtech upgrade is expected to be fully up and running by the time of the World Cup which will see an expected increase in mobile profits. In a statement Ladbrokes said,” Completion of the remaining platform, product and capability upgrades means first-half 2014 group operating profit is targeted to be ahead of second-half 2013 but down on the comparative period, with further growth anticipated through the second half of...

U.S. Supreme Court Declines To Get Involved In Poker Debate

The legalization of online gambling in the U.S. is an ongoing battle for both legislators and gambling companies pushing their products. The status quo of three states offering limited online gambling could swing either way. Nevada for example is currently allowing online poker only while New Jersey is less restricted. Online poker enjoys a unique status from other casino games as even amongst opponents of gambling there is more of a consensus that skill and not only chance play a part. This has led to groups like the Poker Players Alliance insisting that poker be classified in its own class as a game of skill and not chance. We reported back in August 2013 on the rationale of classifying poker as a game of skill and therefore does not violate Federal laws. The case of Lawrence DiCristina was discussed as a good example of how the definition of poker can mean going to jail or remaining a free man. Basically in August last year the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York reversed a decision that stated that DiCristina could not be prosecuted for holding a game of poker in a warehouse in Staten Island which was promoted by word of mouth and sms as it was a game of skill. The law in question was enacted n 1970 with the aim of fighting organized crime. The latest blow to DiCristina came on Monday when the Supreme Court declined to involve itself in the debate over whether poker is a game of skill or chance. This in effect leaves the door open for people like DiCristina who organize games to be prosecuted under Federal Law. This latest development is bad news for DiCrisitna and could mean that he could face up to 10 years in...
